First United Methodist Church of Windsor

News from the Pews
What Went Wrong?
That's the title of our guest preacher's sermon this week - but don't worry! He's not talking about Pastor Emily, her new call to Christ Church Denver, or your incoming Pastor Phil Vogels (who begins July 1st). This Sunday, Dr. Jim Barrington will share a message from Luke 17 about why doing the right thing is not always enough. As Christians, we are also to experience joy, gratitude and worship! Jim was an active member of our church since age 25, but was recruited by First Christian Church across the street to be their pastor for 19 years. When he retired, he passed the mantle to his daughter, Pastor Teresa Barrington, who still proudly serves our neighboring church. Jim is remarried and now lives most of the year in Arizona, but he and Sandi are delighted to join you on Sunday at 10AM to share a Father's Day service.

    Leadership News
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Thank you so much to those of you that attended church service this past Sunday and stayed to say goodbye to Pastor Emily. It was awesome to see the sanctuary with people in every pew! Especially compared to the dozen or so people we saw as the church started to re-open as Covid restrictions were lifting. We have said farewell in style. Now we are looking forward to welcoming our new pastor, Rev. Phil Vogels.

Please accept this note as an invitation for you to attend our next Leadership Board meeting in Fellowship Hall next Tuesday, June 22nd at 5:30 PM. The first half of our meeting will be set aside to brainstorm a vision for our church going forward. If you have ideas for a Vision Statement but are unable to attend, please email them to me.
I am so excited for the future of our church! I continually pray for the health of our congregation and each of you. God Bless each and every one of you.

    Leadership Chair
    Volunteers needed
We need to revive the tradition of having 1-2 ushers and greeters in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings to pass out bulletins, help new people find seats/get comfortable, and hand out Wiggly Worshiper Bags. We also need 2 volunteers at the Welcome Desk downstairs each week to keep our attendance, guest registry and contact tracing. Please contact the Church Office now to volunteer.
    Columbine reunited
Our Sunday afternoon worship services at Columbine Commons have been reunited into one service at @2PM on the Assisted Living side. Masks are less stringently required, and even Communion is welcomed! Praise be to God! Please contact the Church Office to sign up in pairs to lead a short 20-30 minute service of prayer, song, Scripture and message. We hate to disappoint our seniors, but still have many open dates this summer! Please contact seasoned volunteer Pat Ferrell if you have any questions.
    Celebrate good times
Happy Birthday to Jeff Stephan  (6/17) and Mel Klema (6/23).
Happy Anniversary to Kevin and Angie Johnson 24 years (6/22).

Please share your dates with us!

    Prayer requests
Pastors Emily and Phil and their families for the transition, Vera C. (chemotherapy), the Klema's friend Leann Wyatt (cancer diagnosis), Francy's friend Jenny Manuel, those recovering from illness (Bill H., Meg P., Lynda C.) or grief (Norman Rowland's daughter Vicky Schenkein, the Harris-Reed family), for our homebound members Ann, Eileen, Judy, Bud, Bob, and Don.

    News from the Pews
    Loving Outrageously

I apologize if my announcement late last week and on Sunday morning upset you. I am still serving as your Pastor until June 30th (so feel free to call, email, text or connect), but this Sunday, June 13th, will be my last in the pulpit. Some asked me angrily why I'd want to leave early, or if I have enough vacation days. These questions, while not uncommon, show a fundamental lack of understanding of the Call to a Pastoral Life and Ministry. As a full-time wife, daughter, mother and friend, I have always tried to create boundaries between my work and my personal life. But when your deeply personal spirituality and relationships ARE part of your work, those lines get blurry. The Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated this; my working mom friends call it "living in the mush." Where we once had systems, boundaries, and work-life balance, we now have a relentless mush of demands. I am always working, answering your texts, emails, and calls, even on my "days off," and I am always focused on my family, picking up sick kids or quarantining for the millionth time. I pray someday that school and daycare will return to "normal" and the intense fear and panic of the pandemic will subside. Maybe then I can reconstruct some of those delightful boundaries!

But until then... when I accepted God's call to become a pastor, I did not expect to get rich or work a 9-5 job. It's more like 24-7, so I work through illness, and still think about and pray for you, even on vacation! Attempting to serve and love outrageously, as Jesus did, is no small order. Love never ends. That's why pastors these days are encouraged to take a few Sundays off between appointments. I have loved you with my whole heart, with everything I have and all that I am... and I cannot simply flip a switch at midnight on June 30, and stop loving you and start loving the people of Christ Church. The heart doesn't work like that. I, too, need time to grieve, to say say goodbye, to prepare for what is coming - as do you.

So this Sunday, we are going to CELEBRATE!!! We'll remember our successes, give thanks to God for all we've experienced, and delight in our shared past, even as we plan for a beautiful future. Yours will be with Pastor Phil, and mine with the people of Denver at Christ Church UMC. But we still have a few weeks for private goodbyes. So reach out if God leads you. I am here for you. And so is this precious church! My family and I hope to see you all on Sunday at 10AM or online.

First United Methodist Church of Windsor

      News from the Pews
      When's worship?
Please remember that this Sunday, June 6, we will begin worship at 10:00AM (rather than 10:30). Adult Sunday School will meet in person at 9:00AM in the basement, and Fellowship Time after worship will return to Fellowship Hall (with something to eat!)
      Choose courageously
My final month as your Pastor in Windsor has begun. As I work to conclude with dignity and grace, while receiving communications from my new congregation and District in Denver, there are moments when I simply feel overwhelmed and inadequate to meet all the challenges, expectations and emotions coming at me. Perhaps the pandemic has made you feel this way at times, too, or other difficult or transitional periods in your life? Change is never easy, growth "spurts" hurt, and so many people lack kindness. But Jesus Christ gives us a Third Way, an alternative to our nation's obsession with binary choices. He encourages us to choose courageously. Go against the grain. Love and be gentle, even when others attack. In fact, our final sermon series, Beauty Evermore, is based on Psalm 27:1-6, but verse 4 has been my prayer this week: "There is one thing, and one thing only, that I ask of you, Lord: to live in God's house my whole life long. I will spend my days contemplating God's beauty, and studying at God's feet." There are plans to make, people to visit, tears to shed and celebrations to attend... and yet, in the hustle and bustle of it all, I feel closest to God in the silence of a gentle breeze, with windchimes tinkling, my children laughing in the background, and my soul reconnecting to God's beauty in creation, in chaos, even in me. May you also find those moments this week!
June 6, 2021 Worship:  Beauty Evermore 1:  Choose Courageously, scripture Psalm 27:1-6

With the updated guidelines of CDC and the State of Colorado, the trustees have updated the Church COVID 19 guidelines. Starting Sunday, June 6, if you are fully vaccinated (2 weeks after final dose), you are no longer required to wear a mask or stay 6 feet away from others, in small or large groups. If you are unvaccinated, we encourage you to continue to wear masks indoors. If you are immuno-compromised, please speak with your physician before retiring your mask.
